Hyperhidrosis can be focal or generalised. Focal (or primary) hyperhidrosis is a chronic genetic disorder, usually inherited; generalised (or secondary) hyperhidrosis may be linked to certain diseases such as diabetes, menopause, or anxiety, among others, or may be caused by certain drugs or treatments.

Hyperhidrosis, which is often aggravated by high temperatures, is not a serious condition, but it does have negative effects in terms of well-being and even psychological consequences. It is important to seek help from medical professionals.

At present, there are several treatments at the aesthetic medical level that can help in the control of this pathology.

    What is hyperhidrosis?

Sweating is the physiological process by which our body manages to maintain an adequate body temperature for it to function properly. It is normal to sweat in the heat or during sport. But when there is excessive sweating or sweating occurs without a clear trigger, it is a condition called hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis can be focal or generalised. Focal (or primary) hyperhidrosis is a chronic genetic disorder, usually inherited; generalised (or secondary) hyperhidrosis can be linked to certain diseases such as diabetes, menopause, or anxiety, among others, or can be caused by certain drugs or treatments.

Hyperhidrosis is often aggravated in hot weather. And that is when many patients are encouraged to seek a solution by visiting aesthetic medicine practices.

The most common areas where treatment for excessive sweating is demanded are the armpits, palms of the hands (palmar), soles of the feet (plantar), lower back, genitals, groin and facial region.

    What treatments are available?

Focal hyperhidrosis cannot be cured, but symptoms can be treated to improve quality of life. Generalised hyperhidrosis may eventually disappear if a specific cause is identified and can be corrected. If this is not possible, the symptoms can also be treated, as with focal hyperhidrosis.

Existen antitranspirantes de Sales de Aluminio que reducen los conductos de las glándulas sudoríparas, bloqueando la salida de sudor. For certain specific cases with hyperhidrosis of recognised origin, medication may be useful. If these options do not solve the problem, the patient can also be treated with other therapies such as:

Ontophoresis: It is often used for palmar and plantar hyperhidrosis. Hands or feet are placed in a shallow tub of tap water. A special device emits a low electric current through the water, blocking the sweat glands over time. Each treatment lasts 10 to 20 minutes. You may need several sessions.

Microwave therapy: This is a high-tech device (called MiraDry®) that is placed on the affected area. The device emits thermal energy (heat), which destroys the sweat glands permanently. The therapy can last from about 40 minutes to an hour. It is a slightly painful technique that may require the administration of local anaesthesia to the area to be treated.

In the Aesthetic Medicine clinic, we can provide a solution to this problem with botulinum toxin.

Botulinum toxin injections (Botox) They are able to interrupt the hyperactivity of the sweat glands when injected into the affected area. Any of the areas can be treated. The session lasts about 20-40 minutes and the results are maintained for approximately 5 to 9 months, depending on the patient’s metabolism. After treatment, normal activity can be resumed immediately. Botulinum toxin treatment for excessive sweating is easy to apply, with minimal side effects and high effectiveness in patients with primary focal hyperhidrosis.

Excessive sweating is increasingly in demand for treatment as a major determinant of quality of life.
